The Catholic faith was first brough to Sault Ste. Marie by French missionaries in the 17th century. On the Sunday after Christmas in 1940, a letter from Bishop Plagens was read at Holy Name of Mary Church announcing the establishment of a new parish named "St. Joseph." St. Joseph Parish was established on January 1, 1941.
The first church was purchased in 1944. It was a former US Army chapel in use at Fort Brady. It was dedicated on February 11, 1945. A rectory was purchased in 1948. By 1959, it had become evident that a new building was necessary. A new parish complex was constructed, including a church, convent, and rectory. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated on April 1, 1961. It was dedicated on May 21, 1961.
