I’m Fr. Matthew Chartier, the associate pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Sault Ste. Marie. I grew up in central time zone on the other side of the UP in Vulcan, MI (near Iron Mountain and Kingsford). I had many different encounters with God throughout high school, which drew me to enter seminary after graduating high school. I went to Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit for eight years.
I was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Marquette in 2023. My first assignment was to be the parochial vicar or associate pastor of St Peter Cathedral in Marquette, MI and St. Mary Mission in Big Bay, MI where I aided in the Catholic school, led a youth adult group, and many other parish activities.
I have been associate pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Sault Ste. Marie since August 1, 2024. Our parish’s goal is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We have great catechetical programs for children and teenagers and a vibrant campus ministry at the Lake Superior State University Newman Center. We have an active food pantry through which we serve our local community, and we provide many opportunities for individuals to grow in faith through worship, education, and service. We are a supporting parish of St. Mary’s school, and we embrace its vision of forming holy, wise, and virtuous graduates.
If I haven’t met you yet, please introduce yourself to me. If you need to get in touch with me directly, please call the parish office (906-632-9625) or email me at [email protected].
