I’m Fr. Brad Sjoquist (pronounced "show-kwist"), the pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Sault Ste. Marie. I grew up on the other side of the UP in Kingsford, MI. After graduating from high school, I enrolled at Central Michigan University where I became heavily involved with the Catholic Campus Ministry. During my four years at CMU, I discerned God was calling me to the priesthood, and I went on to complete the priestly formation program at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit.
I was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Marquette in 2015. My first assignment after ordination was as parochial vicar of Holy Spirit and Resurrection Parishes in Menominee, MI where I taught in the Catholic school and was involved in a wide range of parish activities.
After three years in Menominee, the bishop asked me to go on for further studies. I spent 2018 through 2022 in Rome completing licentiate and doctoral degrees in moral theology. I successfully defended my doctoral thesis in May of 2022, and I continue to do some academic work.
I have been pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Sault Ste. Marie since July 5, 2022. Our parish’s goal is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We have great catechetical programs for children and teenagers and a vibrant campus ministry at the Lake Superior State University Newman Center. We have an active food pantry through which we serve our local community, and we provide many opportunities for individuals to grow in faith through worship, education, and service. We are a supporting parish of St. Mary’s school, and we embrace its vision of forming holy, wise, and virtuous graduates.
